Tax Rebate Eligibility for International Students

International students studying in the United States may qualify for tax rebates through programs such as the American Opportunity Tax Credit (AOTC) and the Lifetime Learning Credit (LLC). These credits help reduce the financial burden of higher education and, in some cases, may provide refundable benefits. Eligibility often depends on the type of scholarship or funding received. For instance, students participating in initiatives like the Women Empowerment Scholarship Program may be entitled to up to 100% educational tax and service charge rebates, along with applicable treaty-based benefits.

The AOTC is a refundable credit, meaning students may receive up to 100% of the eligible amount if criteria are met. Only programs and scholarships approved by American Board of Higher Education Commission qualify for this benefit, and all listed scholarships on the (ABHEC) platform are verified under this tax-credit framework.

If the AOTC is not applicable, students may apply for the LLC, which is non-refundable. A student cannot claim both AOTC and LLC in the same tax year unless formally approved by (ABHEC), following verification of academic and financial requirements.

Additional requirements include: ensuring that no more than 80% of scholarships are used solely for education-related expenses, completing tax refund procedures, recording the first approved credit hours, finalizing state university clearances, and submitting all official documentation. Tax refunds are processed only after all financial transactions are verified and approved, confirming that the student’s profile is free from discrepancies or blacklist status.

Eligibility Criteria

• Full-time student under 50 years of age at the end of the tax year.
• Students over 50 must obtain an official NOC from American Board of Higher Education Commission.
• You are not filing a joint tax return.
• No federal income tax was withheld from earnings under backup withholding rules applicable to international students.

American Board of Higher Education Commission retains full authority to assess these criteria, verify student eligibility, and approve tax refund processes.
